Targa Top Painting
I posted this one on the Rennlist too.
What materials have others used to prep and paint their Targa Top? I want to stick with the original black top with the funny patterned surface. The top is in reasonable shape but just faded. - Dave |

The product "forever black" really works well
Clean your top really well with the cleaner provided and then apply several coats of the black coating. My 74 looks GREAT!! |

What about sandblasting the top with a mild abrasive to get the old crap off, primering it and spraying on a few good coats of enamel??? Have many, or any, people done that???

Tried scuffing up the original "spattered" finish with very fine steel wool--good because it gives the new paint some "tooth" yet doesn't remove the texture. Then I sprayed it with some semi-gloss black enamel from a can. Good paint adhesion, but still a sorta blotchy appearance. I'm going to try the "Forever Black" goop.

Just reporting back on the results.... I ordered the Forever Black stuff over the web and it worked great on the targa roof... it is really black now after two coats. I also used it on the targa bar and sail panel vinal and on the front and rear bumper... it worked great everywhere... I highly recommend this stuff... it makes a world of difference in the appearance of the these parts.

I have an extra roof, is there a good way to sand and paint it to match my paint??
I'd like to give it that 916 look... |

I like that look too...I was going to try sanding down the bumps and repainting. I think the top is fiberglass (isn't it?) but it's the coarse/chopped stuff and I don't know if it'll come out smooth. I think it'll end up looking "hairy" for lack of a better word... ![]() The solution would be to sand as smooth as you can get, then add a layer or two of very fine weave fiberglass on top. This should make a nice surface suitable for painting. Anyway, that's what I'm going to try... -Boyo |

I am pretty sure it will come out smooth. Many people have done this....I had one that had it done but had it repainted and my painter made it like normal again.
