Valve Cover leak

I just rebuilt my 2.0 and it runs great but I can't get the valve covers to seal. I searched the tech archives and found the article about welding the gasket retainers.. I have a new set of covers that I am going to update. Do you guys run the gaskets dry or are we using a sealer??

I always glue my gaskets to the valve covers and don't have any leaks. I use Permatex Ultra Copper to glue the gaskets.

If you are having leaks, there are a few things to check.

1) The valve cover sealing surfaces on the head should be flat and without any scratches
2) The valve covers should be flat (non warped)
3) The head breather vents need to be clear and plumbed correctly.
4) Always use new gaskets when removing/replacing valve covers.

Make sure the VW logo on the valve cover face is upside down when installed and looking at the engine from below. Even though the covers look symetrical...they are not.

Makes a big difference in sealing.

I installed my gaskets dry and no leaks.

An old trick is to use thick grease like Moly and smear it around both sides of the gasket. This usually workes well and is cheap and easy.

Mike is very experienced at changing Valve cover Gasket's under the most adverse conditions:

Don't even tell me he's doing it without the car in the air? Are his arms made of rubber? It truly MUST be some sort of magic! (second pic?)

Oh, I put mine on dry, making certain the surfaces are clean and flat. No leaks yet (insert crossed fingers, lit candles and chanting)

that's funny. He's a big dude to be trying to work under a 914 without a lift...I am going to change my gaskets this weekend. The valve covers on the car were bent a little. I figure that's my leak. I have a new set of covers to put on it now.
Thanks for all of the replies.

Yup, I'm a stud... It did it while it was hot too. I don't like delays much. It was the first time in a few years that my grease trick didn't work. Thanks James
