Installing Rear Flare Kits

Now that I have the motor running rather well on this restoration project, it is time to address the body issues.

I am thinking about replacing both rear quarter panels with the fiberglass supplied by Rennspeed.

But I am also interested in just adding flares. How do they install? They don't appear to be bolt-on, and there would be issues with the existing "flare." Since I am a newbie here I haven't seen any installed on a teener.

Installing flares, rear or front is not a big a problem as I thought it would be. The bigest step is cutting out the fenders. Mine are from Renspd as well. They fit fairly well.
Steps:
Obtain a good cutting disc and sawsall.
Hold flare against fender and mark inside so that a good 1-2 inch mounting lip is created.
Cut fender.
Refit flare and make adjustments.
Using a fiberglass epoxy body filler, place filler on fender and flare.
Attach flare at very top with self tapping screws ( you will need a couple hundred of these).
Remove the paint on the fender to bare metal.
Using a 5 min. house hold epoxy, coat both the bare metal and the mating surface of the flare. Let dry completely (24hr). This provides a good adhering surface for the filler epoxy.
Attach flare to fender going from top screw down each side.
Let epoxy set.
Remove screws.
Test that flare is attached well (pull on the flare, better it come off now).
I placed a few revits on the flares to assure adherence, probably not needed.
Sand smooth.

Wow, that is some very nice work John. How long did that red 914 take you? Very nice altenative to welding in more steel or gluing on fiberglass. What size rears are you running on that car?

Thanks for the kind words. The red 914 took quite a while. I did not keep track though. I'm keeping track on my car. The real hours are in the finish work after all the shape is there. Zach's car has 15X8 Fuchs all the way around with room for 9" a possibility in the rear.

i have a pair of fiberglass rear flares i pulled off a wrecked 914 in the junkyard a couple years ago. i never got around to putting them on my car. then i gave my car to my dad and he isnt interested in the flares.

any one want them? ill take $50 for the pair. they are used, have screw holes from being already mounted, and are cracked in a couple places. but they are fiberglass to they should be easy to fix up and put on.
they look exactly like the fiberglass rear flares pelican sells.

I have never installed flares, but shouldn't one put on flared rockers first to aid in aligning the flares? Just my 2 cents. Pete

I have a new set of 7 & 9 inch Rennspd flares and rockers. I have never installed a set of flares before, either but, it seems like a good idea to do a temporary install of the rockers so as to help with the alignment of the flares.
If I'm wrong, please, someone, let me know and why.
