914 with no solid top- not targa???
I had seen a 914 for sale, but it appears to have a solid roof. I thought I had read somewhere that there was a european model that was not a targa, is this right? Was there a model sold in the US with a solid top? Any help would be great, thanks to those whom look at this thread!

I'm going to say no.

Probably a racer
Although the factory produced a few (can't recall- a couple of "916s" for shows, I think a couple that had the "M467" or some such designation for racing, and one V-8 for Dr Porsche's Birthday) that attached hardtops, I think it is a quick way to add some rigidity to the structure for racing purposes.

Actually, I think I read that the factory race cars ( 916?) were like that. I don't believe any production cars were like that though.

Only the 916's were made with a steel integrated roof (i.e.
continues to the pillars front and back. The 914-6 GT cars got around a rules problem of needing not to have a removable roof, by adding some metal brackets and stuff, bolting in the standard style roof in the four obvious places. But there were no 914's made with a steel roof. Mark S. '70 914-6 RCD Video |
might have been a smoothed roof that kinda looked like a solid roof from a little ways away?

Is it silver with four headlights?
|
No, it's not silver with four lights, it's red. Actually, I was just talking to the seller today, and he is selling it for someone else. When I was talking to him, he wasn't even aware the tops came off on 914's. So it more than likely does have the targa top. Whom knows, we'll see maybe. Thanks everyone for your replies.

11 916's were made, half for the family, and the other half for friends and special dealers of the family. M471 was the steel flare, chassis stiffining kit, wider wheels, and bigger brakes package for the 914/6 GT's. The factory made several GT's, and made hundreds of kits readly avalable for 914/6 owners for an SCCA racing homolonogized (?) class, but the SCCA didn't go for it and put the gt's in a higher, non competitive class. |
