well, if you are referring to the part hanging down under the dash, that looks like the fuse panel. i see that the car has the in-dash oil-temperature gauge...

that's the fuse panel hanging down. it may just need screwed back into place.

What significance does this car having an oil temp guage have? Sorry, just now trying to "get my feet wet." Does this mean it already has the oil cooler? Thanks again for all your help.

Naah. It simply means that someone swapped in a 914-6 temp gauge.

The Six was the only 70-73 914 that had an in-dash temp gauge. You can tell it's a 70-73 gauge because of the silver cones in the center. In later years, 2.0 cars that did not have center consoles also had the in-dash temp gauge--but there was no silver cone in the middle of the gauge...

It is possible that some 73 2.0s came without center consoles, but those would be a real rarity.

...Anyway, it just means someone added the gauge.

a rare case indeed, i have one of those gauges installed (73 only) has a different temp insert than those of the six. works great.

also..its noted in johnson's book or paternie's book. :)

there is a 1973 914-4 gauge with the center silver button (had one/have one in car i own). like the console temp gauge, it has a larger red area for a '73 and there is a 1974 gauge without center silver button with smaller red area (also like the console gauge for 74). in the picture on the right where it states it is a -4 gauge, i believe it is actually a -6 temp gauge and that is because of the markings on the beginning of the scale and the end of the scale are -6 gauge markings. -4 gauge markings are different, like in the pix id'ed as a '74 gauge.

youre absolutely right. the temp insert on a six has a warning light for high temps, and the /4 gauge doesnt

I don't think it does... The gauge itself has a light that was used on some cars (25 of them, to be exact!) as an indicator that the Sportomatic transmission was over-temp. But I don't believe the temp gauge module had any warning light in it at all.

i saw the light on a 22k mile original 6. when the key was turned to on...the light was on....
