POR 15 or Powdercoat - Which is Better?
Just curious.....
I've got the rear suspension out of the car to replace bushings & I thought this could be a good time to re-paint the suspension parts (i.e., swing arm). Whould would be the better route - POR 15 or Powdercoat? Also, I'm assuming that beadblasting would be the best preperation. But, since I don't have a beadblaster (yet) do you think paint stripper would be ok to prep? Any advice would be appreciated, as always...............Vern |

That a bit of an apples and oranges question...
Por15 = rust prohibiter... seals good chip resistance somewhat paintable. PowderCoat = plastic. Not good for chips, and once rust is under it it will spread quickly. Normal prep for powdercoat is stripping , but Eastwoods rust preventor can be topcoated with powdercoat after a few days drying. My advice..and I have a powdercoat setup... paint strip, then rust prevention primer then paint. Save the powdercoat for the gee-whiz parts that dont get rocks ;-) -Rich Hilgersom |

Interesting. I was always under the impression that powdercoating was specifically MEANT for environments where chipping was likely. I've seen quite a few suspension pieces on a lot of cars powdercoated exactly because of its reputation of handling that kind of abuse.

Speaking of Powdercoating: I saw a 914 with black (powdercoated I think) door handles. If is is powdercoating, does that mean you can powdercoat over chrome?
As far as my trailing arms....I'm gonna use POR-15 but I'm also thinking of the Wurth stone guard (as 914 Guy T mentioned) as a top coat. Either that or glitter (lol). |

Damn, i spent $200 on this... that pisses me off!
![]() Well, my goal was to look good if i ever rolled that car. If this crap chips off like you guys say it will, it'll just look like another up-side-down POS 914, rusted suspension and all!

I always use POR-15 for the undercarriage in my cars. It looks pretty good and when some paint scrapes off and rust starts (and it will happen with all the rocks getting kicked up) then I just sand it a bit and slap some more on; good as new. The stuff likes to stick to rusty metal, just make sure you strip all the loose rust off. It isn't what you want for a show only trailer baby, but it works great on the under carriage on a car that you drive.
Thanks, Kevin |
