Moving the battery to the rear trunk?
After finding rust under the battery and on the firewall, I decided to pull the motor and sand blast the engine compartment. I need to replace to top portion of the battery tray, but now think that maybe I'll move the battery to the rear trunk to clean up the engine bay and possibly change a little of the weight distribution. Are there any pro's or con's to this?

Yeah put it in the front truck for better weight distribution not the back trunk. The more weight to the front the more the car will be balanced.

Putting the battery in the front causes a couple extra problems other then helping weight. The problems with putting the battery up front are;
1) Wireing it up - I don't want to do it. 2) Added length of wires to suck more amps - yes its sad but true. The longer the wire, the less effective it is. 3) 911's did this, and its just plain annoying to have to walk to the from of the car to deal with the battery. (it makes measureing some electrical things kind of tricky). Okay, thats enough. I would suggest getting a sealed battery. Sure they are a little extra money, but no rust. I personally like where the battery is. If you put it in the rear trunk, I think you need to cut some of it out to create a level surface. Hope this helps. |

I mounted an Optima battery in the rear trunk. I made an aluminum mounting plate and added a battery hold down kit from my local auto parts store. I also replaced the battery cables. The cable is now actually shorter to the starter than before. I mounted the battery as far forward as I could and on the passenger side to try and maintain the original balance. I lost some trunk space, but gained a lot of room to work on the engine. That was the primary reason for the move actually. The slope in the trunk is not a problem with an Optima battery. I don't know about a traditional battery though.
The rear of the 914 is heavier than the front, but the weight distribution is pretty good. I would not add more weight the front. 911's have way too much weight on the rear, so it was critical to put the batteries at the very front. |
