rocker geometry
Is it common for some of the rocker arms to be off the valve stem center (right/left looking straight into the rocker cavity)? If not how would this be fixed and what is the proper order of parts? Mine is end cap, rocker, washer, spring, washer, rocker, end cap (from the parts diagram this looks correct).

They should be centered on the valve stem. To get this alignment you use shims on either side of the rocker. One of our 914s had a shim break and fall out and made a terrific racket when the rocker went off center. Luckily no damage was done. It is a bugger to try to do with the engine in the car but can be done. Good luck.

The adjuster contact should be slightly of center of the valve stem. This is to aid in the rotaion of the valve during the arch of the rocker arm.
