Jake Raby.. A-Ok in my book

It's come to my attention that recently Jake's knowledge had come into question. Now I dont know the specifics, however I felt obliged to personally say that Jake knows more about VW motors than ANYONE I have ever spoken to. His advice has saved me a lot of time and money in the past.

I have no doubts about his abilities and would trust his word over just about anyone's. The man is a fountain of knowledge and logic.

Just my 2 cents..

I don't see anything wrong with cordially asking anyone on this list to back up their statements and claims with facts. If we can take the personal side out of technical discussions, we'll all benefit from what we learn.

Jake's helped me over the phone, even though I've never purchased anything from him - advised me on my combo, and continues to give me and others good advice on his forum.
Good guy.

Please read all before you get pissed at me...

How is it you confuse TECHNICAL QUESTIONS with PERSONAL VENDETA? I know there are some out there that do it, but Alfred is asking TECHINICAL QUESTIONS. Just read his last post.

Jake has helped lots of people, and if i was still building 4's, i would be calling him up too trying to get info. Jake has the tools to spend all day tuning his motors, and not eveything has a technical answer or can be read in a book, it just is what it is. This is something that Alfred needs to understand.

But one thing Jake needs to understand is that when someone askes him to technically explain something, and he can't because he doesn't know, telling them " i dont have time for this, i'm going to go put together my 200hp motor" isn't going to cut it.

I got into it with Jake a long time ago about the cost of a 4 to a 6, and the reliablity and HP issues. I got the excuse above, although it doesn't bother me ,honestly , how can one of Jakes $8000 motors outlast a $9000 3.2 Carrera motor and conversion parts? Every person in the POC who compeditivly races in the TIV class, eventually goes to the 6 due to cost. THe power and reliablity of the 6 cannot be argued... Otherwise Porsche would have spent more time on it and put it in more cars. Maybe they aren't using Jakes motors or techniques? Maybe Jake has hit the holly grail of TIV engine building?

Jake is a TIV man, its his world. I respect him very much for his knowledge, and the time he contributes to everyone on this board. He truely makes this community better.

Porsche didn't put the Type IV in more cars because, frankly, they didn't own it. Materials and techniques are now available that weren't dreamed of back in the 60s when the Type IV was designed--it's no surprise that they can be used on that motor to extract many times the power it was originally designed for.

Like I've said on other similar threads--both engines have their place. They've both got strong points and not so strong points. In many ways, they're apples and oranges.

Porsche also didn't own the 924, but that didn't stop them from buying it back from Audi and building it....

Actually, they did put that motor to use in the 912E....which is a real lemon....but that's not improtant now.

"many times the power"?

Any IC engine can be made to extract a lot more power.....but for how long. As for "many times".....where? I have yet to see one (out side of pure race cars) that extract even double the power much less many times. Back in the 70s Wayne Baker was gettin' 220 hp out of his 2.2L t-4.....he had spare motors. Has much really changed?

220hp out of a 2.2 won't last? I'll bet the 240hp Honda S2000 2.2 engine will last a long, long time, in fact I think a 914 with one would be cool (or the earlier 2.0 also 240hp).
I'm sure VW would have sold Porsche every T-IV they would buy, it's just that it was an OK engine but nothing special, so it made it to the 914/912E and no other car of theirs.
At the end of the day the air cooled world is great for simplicity but cannot keep up with water cooled engines because they can't get rid of the waste heat. My fan-cooled 500cc snowmobile has a respectable 59hp (imagine a 236hp 2-liter?), but the 500cc liquids get more like 80hp out of them.
A lot of you guys treat Jake like your big-chested high school date that you don't want to piss off... has something you desire, generously shares it with you, but tells you to get bent when you question. I have a great respect his work and success he has had re-engineering (probably a sin to call him an engineer) the Type-IV, but keep it all in perspective, whether you are a doubting Thomas or swallow it whole.

I see my second response was deleted.

Yes he (the one who's name I shall not utter) asks technical questions on occasion....but on other occasions he spews nonsense that gets him banned and smacked if he every talked like that to me....

Now I never have done business with Jake nor do I plan to....I just don't like four bangers anymore....but I have witnessed both sides here. I know which one has more class.

240 HP from the "super hero", which is 3 times the stock 80 HP output of the original Type IV engine. Perhaps "many times" is a small bit of hyperbole, but triple the power of the original design is pretty good.

I think I need to stay out of the rest of this discussion.

Quote one of my "nonsense" statements and then refute it - I'll wait. Btw, you wouldn't smack anybody.
