I'm really insulted...

by AAA's magazine 'Highroads'. Latest issue has 'top 10 worst cars'. Look at the 'Not So Honorable Mentions' list:

Heck, I own a VW thing too. I wonder what proportion of cars from the same era are still in existence compared to the Porsche 914 and VW thing.

Thanks,

Kevin

That's just wrong to have the 914 on the same list with a Hyundai Excel.

Thats funny, they put the Ford Fukkus in there and Motor Trend said it was the best car of 2002 and 2003. Kind of shoots down their opinion. I have to agree with some of those cars, but then again, I am thinking it is just someone elses opinion and not truly based on facts. Dont believe everything you read. Its just Propoganda

Yugo and Pinto were in the top 10 worst cars, and they had a short story on each one. The 914 was on the 'dishonorable mention' list. So at least the 914 didn't get on the worst car list.

I don't have the magazine with me, but I remember Pinto, Yugo, Pacer, and Vega were on the worst list.

The Yugo is probably in the Top 10 list. The full list printed are the cars that didn't quite make the Top 10. Putting the Focus in there is bizarre. It's one of the best selling cars in Europe, and has been for several years.

What was the Top 10 list?

I had a Dodge Omni GLH TURBO with 147 stock ponies. it was a Carrol Shelby car of teh mid 80s. It went 0 to 60 in 6 seconds and I thought htat was fast. the first time I torqued a rod cap , it was on a Chevette. No Gremlin on teh list? where are they all now?

Here are the top 10 worst according to AAA:
1. Yugo
2. Chevy Vega
3. AMC Pacer
4. Ford Pinto
5. Pontiac Aztek
6. Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique
7. Cadillac Cimarron
8. Renault LeCar
9. Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare
10. Geo Metro

Soon after I got my V8 car on the road, I had to call AAA once when a coolant hose popped off. Dumb me had no screwdriver or funnel to refill it with water. The AAA driver had a screwdriver but no funnel. So I put the hose back on myself and filled it with water using a cutoff soda bottle for a funnel. I made sure that doesn't happen again.

Sigh. I get the feeling this article defined "worst" as "most maligned in the US", regardless of actual merit.

The Yugo, for all its flaws, is cheap and cheerful. FIAT 128s powered a lot of Italian and Eastern European families around for years and years. The Contour/Mystique was the Mondeo in Europe, and sold extremely well over there. Certainly a top seller for quite some time. The Renault 5 (unfortunately called the Le Car here) was also a top seller in France for a good long time. My first girlfriend had several, and I never had any problems with any of them.

Meanwhile, they missed the Gremlin altogether. I'm sure there are those that would place nearly the entire output of the AMC factories on a worst list.

I kinda think the original honda's civics , the subaru 360 and the toyota bluebird should be on the top ten list!
On the not -so -honorable mention list ..weren't the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon vw rabbit power trains?
I had an Omni and it was a very economical if not exciting car.

Those things were notorious for having pieces fall off in your hand--mostly interior trim type stuff, but sometimes also the controls...

Buddy of mine in college had a Yugo - tried to blow the motor on several occasions - it just shook violently but kept going, he sorta wishes he still had it, just for laughs, because it was so reliable.
Another friend had an Omni steering wheel come off in his hands......
Yeah, that Aztec is just too ugly for words, as is the Honda Element.

Who designs this crap anyway? I can see them now -
"Baah ha, look what Joe just drew up, NOONE would buy that!"
"Haa, we should pass it through just to see how far it gets!"
Next day -
"Hey Joe, corporate wants to award you for your exiting new idea"
Joe - "No kiddin', huh?"

I believe that the Omni and Horizon were Mitsubishi drive lines. You remember Mitsubishi, they are the ones that made the Japanese Zero's that we had so much trouble with in WWII.
