Can't shift into 1 st gear. Even from a dead stop.

I have this problem where I cannot get the shift into 1st no matter what I try. The problem was intermittent for a while but then became permanent. At first, I could double clutch and get 1st, but then later it just would not go. Any ideas would be a great help.
Thanks
Cliff

When was the last time you checked your bushings and linkage adjustments....?

Sounds like a good time to do so.

Will the trans shift into reverse?
If it wont, you probably have a broken or severly worn shift fork.

Try shutting the engine off. If it goes into 1st easily with the engine off then you have a clutch/transmission problem.

If it won't go into gear even when the engine is off, you have shift linkage/bushing/etc. problems. (Or have totally trashed 1st gear)

It sounds like a clutch adjustment is needed. If you need help on how to do that, just holler.

In a recent Excellence article on the 901 trans it stated that it is best not to come to a complete stop before putting it into first gear. If you should they recommend putting in second engaging the clutch and then switching to first. Also from the the article I got the impression that first on these trans was nothing more than a granny gear to get you going meaning you don't want to tach it out in first. This article was in the past couple of issues.
