Easy Strut Question for Someone

How do I get unspin the funny lock disc holding in the insert on the front strut. I am disassembling a parts car and I have the front struts off, the top of the strut unbolted and off and I am down to the insert, but Haynes is showing a special tool to get at the insert...

Do I need to get out the welder and make a special tool up or has someone else come up with a simpler way to get the lock disc off.
