How many horses can I get?

I am looking at a 2.0L stock engine to put into a '71 914. The engine currently has dual webbers, but I am getting the FI system with it. Which should I use, carbs or FI? What kind of hp can i expect?

If the engine is completely stock (intake, exhaust, etc.), you should be able to get something near the stock rating of 95 DIN HP.

If you have a completley stock motor with the exception of carbs, you should be able to do some tweaking and tuning to get you up near... 95 DIN HP.

If you go with a tuned header exhaust ($$ for the ones that work; $$$$ for the best ones) you can probably get another handful of ponies out of it with a bit of tweaking on whatever fuel system you use.

If you know carbs, use carbs on your motor. If you know injection, use the stock injection. If you don't know either.... Pick one and learn it, I suppose. I like the injection, but some prefer carbs.

I agree with Dave. For a stock motor, if your FI works, use it! But keep the carbs for backup!!! FI parts can be hard to find and very expensive because of its age.

Speaking of expensive d-jet parts - I got an almost new 2.0L MPS last year on ebay for $168 USD. I think the seller could have gotten much more money for it but he wouldn't accept Paypal payments made with a CC.

C'mon guys. I know there are more people with opinions out there. Besides, I thought a 2.0L pushed more than 95hp stock.

Nope!!!

mr-dwight 01-31-2005 09:13 PM

I believe you're heading down the right road (pun intended).

A 2.0L with either carbs or OEM FI (the FI is much better in the long run, if it's functioning properly), HE's (or headers, if you don't need heat), and a decent muffler is going to provide more scoot than what you currently have; just don't expect miracles.

Now, miracles are a bit more $$$ ...

HP costs $$$$$ BOTTOM LINE! I have spent near 4K for my 125hp and will spend another 2-3 to get my 170ish but its the engine that the car was made for!!!!!!!

Kerry Hunter enterprises has a system for fair $ that will give at least 10% I speak from exp......but no heat!!
