A STEERING COLUMN SWITCH?

I have a '70 914-4 . My problem is that my turn signal arm doesn't quite function properly. You can signal for a right turn but not left- also you have to manualy move the arm back to stop the signal- . I cannot find anyway of fixing it easily so someone suggested that I switch to a later model steering column so I can replace the turn signal arm at anytime if need be. Is this true? And if so how hard is it to switch?
