Just got a 914, but it needs help and so do I!!

Hey guys. I recently got a 1972 914 1.7L for free from my friends dad! He was planning on restoring it with his kids but unfortunately none of them were ever interested. I told the guy that my dad (Joe911) and I restored a '69 911S and he told me that if I would do the right thing with it he'd give it to me!! So thats the story.

He said that he installed a new clutch, replaced all the brakes (dont know if thats just pads or rotors or what), he did redo all the interior which look very nice!

So he bought it from the orig owner a few years ago but its been sitting in his drive since thanks to riceburner influenced kids:) My dad and I have a spare 914 tranny, welded diff, in the garage at home as well as the orig 2.0L 6 from the 69 911. so I may go the 914-6 route since I have access to the parts "free."

A few questions, though. There is some very nice rust from under the battery through the bottom of the car. I know this is a problem with these 914 from the engine cover being right over tha battery and the rain going right through. Is there some kind of pre fab panels I can buy and weld them in to reinforce? Also any other tips on rusty spots to look for and fix would be great as well as any websites that helped you guys along the way would be amazing!

Thank in advance for the help guys. Best regards, Joey Riley

Pelican sells replacement sheet metal for the 914. The panels are made by Restoration Design and you can find lots of good pictures of the rust prone areas of the 914 at their web site.

Alfreds answer is a good start..

Hat's off to your Dad's friend.. I admire someone who will gift the car to someone willing to try and do the "right thing" instead of selling it for parts or whatever.

You're kinda of in the same situation as someone who is given a cute little puppy on the promise of raising it right. That sucker may grow up to eat you out of house and home!(And make you deal with lots of $hit) But, like a good dog, that 914 can give you lot's of joy and be a chick magnet to boot! Good luck with the project.

Where to look for rust? Pretty much everywhere I have cut out...or sandblasted...
