High Idle

My idle is about 1500 rpms just sitting there in neutral. I need someone to tell me what the heck is going on? What sorts of things can cause this? The engine stalls very easily and sometimes while nothing is done. In order to get it to not stall immediately after the start you have press the gas pedal in and out a few times for like 5 sec. Even then it quits without my doing anything. I have a new capacitor/condenser but it is kinda hard to get the old one off. Any ideas? Thanks, Jon

If the idle starts off low, i.e. wants to stall, after cold starting but then goes to 1500-2500 after the car warms up, it is probably your AAR (Aux Air Regulator). There have been threads here and Rennlist about this problem -- let me know if you can't find them. My AAR problem was simply that the + power lead had fallen off!

Based on your reported symptoms, I would check for a vacuum leak(s). This would make the mixture lean for a cold idle (wants to hunt or stall out) and would act like opening up the idle speed screw on the throttle body (i.e. more air = higher idle rpm) when the engine is warm.

As far as the high idle goes i would check the AAR and vacuum leaks, I'm not sure but if I remember correctly, incorrect timing can also cause a high idle. As for the condensor, I just changed mine and pulled the whole distributor out to do it, I just couldn't get at the little screw.

good luck
pete
