Using an aftermarket VW stroker motor
 
Can you use an aftermarket VW stroker motor in a 914? I know that you can poke a 2.0L out to a 2.5L, but was just wandering about the VW. One reason I ask is that I would like to preserve my 2.0L and have a engine that was easily replaceable to thrash racing. Any comments?

If it is a Type IV, sure. Any other, I would not waste my time, too much to convert.

No problem a "DOUBLE NICKLE" Type 1 upright case 1955cc 90.5by76.8 waterboxer crankshaft will take a 215mm 914 flywheel.You must use a ''Type2" case look for 3 mounting holes near oil pump. The mounts you will have to fab. Sheet metal will be fun but not a big deal. If the events are PCA such as auto-x and/or club races/drivers ed then the type I engine is not legal. It has to be a Porsche, meaning type IV. That's why I haven't bought one of Pauter's 3.5 liter biiiig fours even though it is based on a type I engine it isn't Porsche. Good luck.

? When you say PORS*HE were do I look? I only see VW AUDI markings on a Type4 914 case # GA006880. I see same marks on Type1 cases. Maybe if you put a VWPORS*HE emblem on the rear?

If you check the link http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/technical_specs/914_chassis_info.htm you are right about the case numbers. The big givaway would be the VW type I heads with the different exhaust ports out the sides instead of the bottom although they are much more efficient you couldn't use them. For everyday use this would be the way to go since type I strokers are much cheaper than a stroker type IV and would probably give more power. Notice I said PCA sanctioned events where a tight tech inspection would find the type I equipemnt and tech inspectors can be a real hardnose at times if they decide they don't like the car and you would be disallowed. The SCCA is real bad about this with Porsches and will look for little details.

Why would you want to use a modified magnesium VW case when the aluminum 1.7 is readily available, and can be modified by a shop into just about anything you want? Michael Nugent's 2.5 liter 914 Lite, http://home1.gte.net/nugentmd/914lite.htm , started life as a 1.7.

The first is cost, the second is about 50lbs of weigth as Type1 is lighter.And some of us just like to be different.

I am looking at a 2.0 3 bolt intake head commonly called 2.0 PORS*he head part# VW 039.101.321A Ask POA if they are both VW engines then both should be allowed to compete. This looks like lawsuit material.It depends on what the meaning of vw is?Is.

Steve, don't be so sensitive about it. Nobody is calling a 914 "NARP"--we are all 914 folks here.

PCA says that the club is for Porsches. They define that as a car with an original Porsche body and an original Porsche engine. They very nearly didn't let the 914 in back when because it has a VW engine. (I think the fact that the earliest 356es also have VW engines helped to persuade them.) They now define "Porsche engine" as "an engine that was original equipment in a vehicle that was originally sold as a Porsche".

Type I and WBX engines do not fit that definition. Type IVs do--at least the "W", "EA", "EB", "EC", "GA", and "GC" ones do.

Many PCA zones/regions have "other" classes, where non-Porsche cars can run. Vettes, Supras, GTIs, Camaros, 914s with Chevy V8s, and so on. But those do not qualify for year-end trophies, and they often run only if the events do not fill up with qualifying Porsches.

Please calm down, Steve.

I spoke to few local PCA racers about running different heads (custom designed watercooled Type IV) and aftermarket P/C's and it seems that as long as the block is a Porsche block or in our case VW (or a block that came in a Porsche vehicle ) then it can be allowed to run.

They didn't at the Porsche Parade and we don't in Zone 8 events in the regular P-car classes. As Dave said it will run in the "X" class. If you have another car that is a Porsche, then usually you'll get in. I was going to use a set of Pauter heads which are probably the best in the world, but since I vintage race mine, I checked first and the answer was no.

Dave is right! The 914; all 914's have tech. speaking "PORSCHE" engines!! The 914 2.0 cly. heads WERE actually designed by the Porsche team! And who are we all kidding here; Dr. Porsche DID design the VW! And how many 356's, 911's and yes 924's...944's use VW marked parts on them, or have you just never noticed??
Do any of you know that the TP 4 engine orginally designed by Porsche (yes) was developed to run GENERATORS that would operate in the Artic and the Sarara continously! Very well built.. overbuilt engine! Crank journals larger than a Big Block Chevy! Built properly can produce some serious HP!
And I ask why do you think so many 914's are still alive?? Is it because they rust away so badly? Or because of the Vega engine they had...NOT! Did you also maybe know that in the eary 1970's the ADVERAGE driver put on 25000 miles a year on these cars! Try that in your 1970-73 Mustang!! No wonder Porsche used VDO odo's!!
