Type 1 Lightened Flywheel ?
 

I have just rebuilt my 1973 Super Beetle motor. It is completly stock except the pistons may be 87's instead of 85's. I have added the GT exhaust and a progressive air filer. I have a lightened flywheel that I was thinking about putting into the car but someone told me that it would cause the engine to die out if not constnaly rebbed at a certain RPM, I dont wanna die at every stop light and was wondering as to how accurate that person is. Thanx.

NO! You might need to ease into the clutch a bit more, but the engine will idle just fine.

I have a lightened flywheel in my 914 race car and from a start I have to rev it a little more than with a stock flywheel, but once I get moving it seems to rev up a little faster, but the revs also come down a little faster due to loss of the extra rotating weight, but that is good when you want to brake hard for a corner! I'd say go ahead and use it.

I would leave it stock and add a Berg Equalizer pulley it weights 5.5 lbs.it realy helps stock motor with 87mm slip-in you dont want to hotrod to much.I would of used 88.5 machine-in as cylinders are thicker.Steve

If all is stock...intake/exhaust...i would not go with a lighter flywheel...add a 4to1 header and say dual kadrons with a 009...a 12lbs flywheel will idle nicely...next stop...a cam or ratio rockers...with an engle 110 cam you get a nice loping idls...sound hot. with the increased engine flow the lighter flywheel will increase throtle response...NOTE: Gene Berg indicates that you should add weight to the pully end of the crank with the lighter flywheel..

I have raced with the set up mentioned and with great results...10.0 in the 1/8 mile..with stock 85.5 p/c's.

Oh,, BIG NOTE..eight dowels in the crank!
