Question about Engine Stands

I want to get an engine stand but the specialized Porsche/VW stand is very pricey.

I'm wondering what is the advantage of the specialized tool. I looked at basic engine stands and they look like they are adjustable to fit a VW engine - So, can anyone tell me what the difference is?

Thanks....................Vern

The "proper" adaptor, which will bolt to your garden variety stand, has a ring which bears against the entire surface of 1/2 of the case. This greatly reduces the possibility of damage to studs or the case, while allowing the case to be split while the stand is in place. I bought one from a place called "Mainely Custom by Design", nicely machined for about $160. A google search will turn them up and they sometimes sell on eBay.
