74 1.8 Relay Identification
Hi all,
My first post in the 914 forum..... . Can anyone identify the 4 relays on top of the fuse block? I know of the turn signal / flasher relay and the horn relay. There are two other round relays that I am not sure about. Ordering a Haynes and will check PP for a wiring diagram. I changed all of the fuses and replaced the horn relay and turn signal relay to correct a few problems. However, I might just want to renew the other two. Not sure what they do. Thanks, Cole |

The easiest way to figure them out is to check the color of the wires that run to the relay sockets. Match those up with the wire colors in the wiring diagram for the various relays.

The other 2 relays on top of the fuse block are the accessory relay (switched power to the accessories like the fresh air blower) and the fog light relay.
Dave... I am suprised you didn't know this! BUWHAAAAA... future tech quiz question......

Dave and Clay,
Thank you both. This car is very low optioned - so no fog lights. I assume the harness is equipped to handle the addition? Is this an easy add on (providing you can find the switch, headlight grills and lights)? I was not sure if that was a common dealer add on? I have had the car only 4 days and have enjoyed exploring it. I sorted the horn, flashers and brake lights. Now just spending time cleaning it up. Frank |

I don't believe foglights were a dealer add-on item. I believe they were factory. By 73 at least, it seems that VW/Porsche/Karmann had found it was easier to just have a single wiring harness for all cars, no matter the options.
So you should find the relay socket for the foglight relay, and you should find the wires in place--roughly. The ones under the dash may be folded up and tucked out of the way somewhere, or folded back along the main harness or some such. The ones to the lights should still be there, either in the trunk or out in front of the front panel but behind the bumper. --DD
