Replace Windshield and Trim for Paint

i am prepping for paint and am in need of a new windshield. i have read past posts regarding using modern trim in place of the 914 expensive stuff.

Read in one post the person got a new windshield and new trim with chrome strip for $180. Is this really possible?

Does anyone know a glass shop in the LA area that has a replacement glass and new trim?

If i can strip the car paint it and take it to the shop for the glass work, that would be ideal.

I've heard of trim off a CRX and trim off a minivan (Aerostar?) being used. Or just plain generic-o windshield trim. You may want to paint the edges of the windshield black (from the edge to about 1/2" in on the inside) to help hide the "goo" that glues the windshield in--I don't think the modern trim hides quite as much as the OEM stuff does.

So is it possible to remove the trim, glass and old gunk and seals and install a new glass using universal moulding and glue? or do i need the OEM seal that the glass sits on? the few shops i called say i need the OEM stuff.

Car is in paint prep stage so should I remove everything, get it painted and then worry about putting new glass in? my windshield is star cracked in a couple of places and a little yellow.
Also need a source for a new one.

Hi GT

Remove the trim, old windshield, and clean the pinchweld area of all old adhesive. This is the time to replace the lower windshield seal along the front of the dash as well. It makes it nicer to paint with the glass out but not necessary. With the interior still in the car it's easier to install the windshield then mask.

I've used both the butyl tape and the 3M urethane sealant for windshield adhesive. The tape is much easier to use and does a neater job. There is a primer for the pinchweld area you should use before setting in the adhesive, and this also blackens-out the area under the glass to make it look better.

I've only used the stock trim on the clips but others have used some other car model trim or 'generic' stuff the glass companies carry. I would think this can be done anytime after the glass and paint is done.

If they say that, they don't know what they're talking about. The windshield is held in by the "goo" (butyl tape)--the trim only keeps water out of the seam and gives it a finished look. If you can fit the trim somehow (not sure how that works, frankly!) you can just glue the thing in with butyl tape and it should be good. There are a couple of rubber blocks toward the bottom of the windshield which serve as spacers to position the windshield correctly.

Well took off the outside trim. Turns out the PO glued it all down without the clips-couldn't salvage any of it. Looks like it's going to be a chore getting the glass off and channel cleaned out.

I had the windshield replaced last year, the dam stainless trim keeps lifting. I want to remove the stainless and looked into the universal molding, they all seem to be put on with the windshield out. My windshield has no leaks so I am not about to take it out. Is there a universal trim I can put on with the windshield in?

I have been looking around and it seems that the universal stuff is all purpose. You sput it around the glass and glue the whole thing in. Here are some links to info I found. Only thing is I can't find a universal trim/moulding that has a chrome look.

I like the black trim myself, gives a nice Euro look. Unless you looking to keep it original, you could use the rubber trim until you find some good original trim.
