Port Polish heads/ larger valves
Ok, I found someone to do a port and polish job on my 1.7 heads. He suggested putting 1.8 valves(which are cheap). Will this make much of a difference power wise?

It depends...if you use the stock cam and stock FI...minimal. If you go with carbs or a tweaked FI with an aggressive cam, yes.

I will be adding a performance carb cam and dual Weber IDF 40s along with a big bore kit(96mm).
The guy that is going to do the job is supposedly the in South Texas(according to some local shops and my uncle who used to race vws in the 80s plus he lives just a couple of miles from me). He wants about 300(both) for everything. I just need to provide the heads and valves. This guy will only build them if you plan to at least do some racing. He is real serious about this stuff. |

I think you should go to 44mm intakes and 38mm exhausts to really see some results from the porting, the 96mm P&C's, the carbs and the cam. The 1.8 valves are still pretty small (39x34) and why go to the expense of porting and putting in new valves unless you do it right. These engines were designed for low rev's, and gas mileage to push around a bus. Open the heads up so the engine can breath and see the results.

The guy I talked to who is going to do the heads told me that the large valves (which I have to get on my own. He doesnt sell them) cost like 80 a piece. Is that true? I havnt called about them yet. I know I can get the 1.8 valves for around 10 from a local VW shop.

Some of the valves are that expensive. The 2.0 exhaust valves, which are sodium-filled, are around that price. Pelican has them for $60 each, new. The intakes are $32 each. Notice that the 2.0 intakes are only 1mm bigger than the $8 1.8 intakes...
The 1.8 stuff is definitely the cheaper way to go. You can go bigger than the 2.0 ones, and they'll also be (relatively) cheap. I don't know about the quality, though--the SS valves that MSHP used to sell have caused lots of problems for some folks. The adjusters would wear, the valve tips would wear, and so on. --DD |
