Engine rebuild

I am preparing to rebuild a 1.8, I have it torn down and am ready to order parts. I found a 2.0 that was overhauled 5 years ago but never driven but about 300 miles. As I am new to rebuilding 914's would it be better to rebuild , if i have to , the 2.0 or keep the 1.8? The 2.0 will cost 800.00 to buy as is.

I might add that I can buy the entire car, a 73 2.0, for 800. It has a 2 barrel carb and the body is poor.

FWIW - The 2.0 is the way to go, but...

What does overhauled mean? Will the engine turn and can you check the compression? You will want to inspect the pistons and cylinders regardless. Mine sat for years too and had good compression, but the rings were badly cracked. Glad I checked!

A single two-barrel carb... Does the current owner have the stock FI in a box or can you get one inexpensively?

Why did he 'overhaul' the engine then run it for only 300 miles?

How are the heat exchangers and exhaust on both cars? They are not interchangeable.
Does the 2.0 have other (expensive!)parts you are going to need anyway? Good bumpers? Rear brake calipers? Door handles?

I bought an incomplete parts car in addition to my 2.0 restoration and it was well worth it.

Thanks DDS for replying to my questions. I went ahead and bought the 73 2.0 and I also bought a 71 1.7. Now I own 4 914's. I should have a lot of spare body parts use and sell. Will pull the 2.0 out next week and look it over.
