I need help with my new 34 ICTs

Hello everyone, Ok, this is driving me up the wall, I converted my 1.7 over to carbs using EMPIs 34 ICT kit (yes I know, I said the "E" word). I have been a avid VW mechanic for years but I cant get this damn car to go down the street! The conversion was done properly, 009, facet fuel pump, etc. The carbs and linkages are all dialed in and synced. Idles great, revs to the moon------------then you try to drive it, 1/8th inch of throttle is perfect, step on the throttle and it spits-sputters-pops-coughs-feels like its missing-and shoots sauerkraut out the tailpipe! -------Ive checked and synced and synced and checked, leaned out, fattened up, flipped the whole setup 180 degrees, NO CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help me please-----------Im about to put the injection back on---at least I can dial that in! Thank you----Kris

where in SoCal are you?

A few people have just done this swap on 1.7 and a 1.8 and can set you up with what you need to know.

Kris, I don't think these carbs have a choke. I suggest , don't use the black plastic insulator casket. Use a steel crush casket (maybe a little sealer on it). This way the intake manifold will get hot. I always use this setup. The same is true of the 32/36 single carb setup. those long runners have to get warm befor they will take any gas. Also try a richer idle jet. Al

Thanks guys, Im in Fullerton for the first reply, and for the second reply, its just straight gaskets, no stock FI spacer, the manifolds get nice and toasty. Im beginning to think I have a defective EMPI product. Even a not perfectly dialed in set of ICTs will get you down the road. Now in the camshaft section of pelican it says the FI cam is very specific for FI, but it cant be this bad can it???????????

"saurkraut out the tailpipe...." what does that mean? Smoke, fire?

just wondering if the distributor alignment is wrong, so it arcs to a different terminal when it advances. I had a 280z like that once.

I'm not at all knowledgable with the ict, are they set up like a the downdraft and sidedraft duals, but just a single throat?

Yes, one single barrel 34mm per side, no choke. (The kraut part is a joke)

34 carbs

Diesel Man :
I did the same last yr. with the no choke deal. Pump the excellerator peddle twice to start. Whith no choke will run rought for a short time, but smothes out shortly. It never will run as smooth as the F.I. unless you change the cam. F.I. cam, are for F.I. . Most of the problems are from 0 to 3,500 RPM's after that it smooths out and runs great. Highest mileage i got this yr. was 39 mpg ,on our flat Mid West roads. Pervious set up was a single two barrel ,mounted in center of engine . That really sucked ( you know what) . I really think unless you intend to rebuild in the future,I.E. change cam. Go back to the F.I. My 2 cent,s Dave

Alright, Im putting the injection back on. At least it will look real sweet all cleaned up, plus Im not a hacker so I didnt cut the harness at all. Big job to do, but thats what I do. Im looking forward to actually accelerating when the light turns green! Thanks for all of your help guys. I will let everyone know how it turns out once I get a day to do it.

Ok, Ok. Soo, I'm gunna have to post here. As A(admin at the 914club.com)aron said. But even better I have TWO cars here that have been converted to carbs without any of the perviously mentioned problems. Idels smooth, runs fine rigth up to (and beyond) redline. Brando, Aaron have driven it. Dr. Evil spun one out at the WWC at the Streets of Willow. Nobody said it was down on power. If you really want to know how someone fells about it ask Linda Horne (/L.) here and at the Club. You can get new carbs, Hex Bar Linkage, fule lines, fule pump with regulator, distributor with Igniter, Throtel pedal and throtle cable for under 1K.

I just got my car back and RUNNING with carbs. The 'D'jet cost my a bundle and had to take it back time and time again to the mechanic. And still wasn't right. Rebuilt MPS, new wire loom, replaced ECU, reconditioned TPS, trigger points and ground strapes, all new vaccum lines and clamps. And we still could not get it to run properly. NOW! I'm happy again :D More power and runs smoother than ever and has less crap in the engine bay. So I'm very pleased.

009 isnt the dizzy you want though. Doesn't advance out far enough.

WRONG. you time it to your max advance. the problem isnt MAX advance, its the advance CURVE. to get desired max advance, it MAY be too advanced or retarded at idle, and give really crappy performance below your desired max advance.

Ok people, I do believe I have figured out the problem---but hold on a minute---So I got a few minutes the other day, went through it again, re-checked timing and points gap, did some slight adjustments with linkage just to be absolutely positive Im not a nutjob. So I had a little time to drive it and I came to this conclusion......Its the friggin EMPI manifolds!!!!! They are warped!!!!! The kit comes with paper or some sort of fiber gaskets to put between the head and the manifold, and obviously it isnt enough to compensate for the EMPI quality control. After engine fully warms up the problem goes away ALMOST completely. So long story short, Its vacuum leaks.....terrible when cold and improves dramatically after 20 mins of hard running. I couldnt believe how good it ran fully hot. So now for my next task, remove and true-up the manifolds and buy some better gaskets.....I will definately update when I complete this task........I will get some time soon. LETS FIX THIS CAR!!!!!!!!!

take some 40 grit paper, and wrap it around a block of wood..and lap those suckers. take permanent marker and mark lines across it, and stop sanding when the line is gone.

Dave at Pelican Parts 11-06-2005 08:36 AM

A piece of glass would be better. It's a lot easier to find perfectly flat glass than it is to find a perfectly-flat piece of wood.

I was going to say glass, and I don't know why I didn't.

Kris Aaron is right. You get the minor bull$hit sorted-out and the rest will fall together. Like I said I have 2 cars converted to carbs her and both run great.
