To Bug or no

I've got to make a decision pretty soon here.....
I've had my 914 for about 6 years now and put a 2.0 with FI in about 2 1/2 years ago. The motor runs great but the vehicle is falling apart around me. I smile when I see people concerned about a little rust in the battery tray area......Mine was so bad the frame broke and the wheel was cocked up into the wheel well. There is a lot more rust than that, too. Just about every spot prone to rust is rusted through- floors, trunk, boot, below the windshield, bottoms of the doors etc.

I'm thinking of getting a clean Bug and moving the motor to it. The thing is I don't want to be dissapointed in the ride and handling.

The other option, of course, is to scrap it and get a Corrola.

The question is to BUG the motor or bug out altogether?

RandyLok 11-23-2005 02:41 PM

It would be quite a project to put the motor in a bug.

These things are unique... if you would consider a Corolla, I don't think you're addicted enough. Better go with the 'yota. :)

A Type IV 914 motor will fit in a bug but needs significant mods.

One would be better served to buy a good rolling 914 chassis and swap your stuff....you would also have a good parts source.

Eddie Brown 11-23-2005 11:56 PM

Sure it fits...

...and it handles pretty good with a HD Sway bar and big meats in the back.

Joe Bob 11-24-2005 06:59 AM

AFTER it's been conerted to upright cooling....heck I put one in a 356...

Eddie Brown 11-24-2005 08:56 AM

Well, the conversion is pretty easy anyways. If you're worried about the handling you should get a ride in any of Jake's customer cars. I'm not saying that a bug with a T4 stuffed in it is the equivalent to a 914, but it's better than the Corolla for sure! LOL!.

I'm trying to get my 914 finished because I love everything about it...good luck with your decision.

I was just looking at your page. Very similar to my set up. I'm using an eboost2 controller and BOV with a garret T3. I'm gonna end up using the Schwitzer on the 914. Good stuff!

Eddie Brown 11-24-2005 09:05 AM

A former customer of mine originally wanted to twin turbo charge the original engine in his 63 or 64 356. I suggested either a CB Performance set up or a T4 convesion. He's doing the T4 conversion as we speak.

In a Ghia...

John, have you met the local cops yet?

The magic phrase is "a dozen donuts."

Rog :)

John Kelly 11-28-2005 04:59 AM

Hi Roger,

The only local cops I'm likely to meet are the clam cops. The Ghia won't see the road for a while.....1/2 mile of welding, lots of metalshaping etc to go...

I wish I could find a good rolling 914 chassis. In this part of the country they are few and far between (Mobile , AL). I think I'm more likely to find a nice Bug, maybe a Ghia but they are pretty rare around here, with a blown engine and an owner who has had his fun and doesn't want to go through the engine fixing thing again. I see a number of pretty slick bugs running around. I need to get in with the local Bug crowd and see what I can find.
Who knows? Mayybe I'll just sell my spare engine.....http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1133187125.jpg

If you put it in a standard bug, you will be disappointed with the handling. I had a super beetle for many years prior to the 914, loved the handling, but was not enthused about the power. There are issues unique to the super beetle, but nothing insurmountable. You can get a decent 914 roller for pretty cheap, which is the direction I would go, you already have a parts car:D

BARRY MISHLER 12-12-2005 05:22 PM

My brother -inlaw lives near you. I`m in Pensacola,Fl.contact me I might be able to hook you up with a roller.

PM Jason Porter on this board. He had a hot rod bug with a Type 4 in it that hauled ass.

What I know is that the type 4 will bolt up to a stock bug transaxle, however, you will have to ditch the stock cooling impeller and use either an upright cooling shroud or one of Raby's DTM's, Think you have to use a center bearing out a vanagon and a few other clutch items. There are a few different options for exhaust, check the usual VW guys. It's a pretty easy swap from what i've seen. Only took us about a half hour to pull it out in the Pelican parking lot one day.

I think you'll also want to invest in a transmission that has been geared for the Type 4 as well. Luckily, VW parts are relativley cheap.

Joe Bob 12-12-2005 07:46 PM

Horsepower overwhelms gearing....

karlp 12-13-2005 10:56 AM

Barry-
I recieved notice that I had a PM but could not retrieve it. I've sent you one with my e-mail adress.
I would be interested in a roller

Hey man you want a 914 tub?
I got a 70 tub that you could swap all your parts to.
Ain't perfect or nothing but I am about ready to get rid of it cheap.. real cheap.
Close enough to you for your to stop by and look at anyway.

karlp 12-13-2005 01:15 PM

Hey Joe
Yeah, I'll come look
We were supposed to get together 6 months ago, anyway. My how time flies.
I won't bring up Hurricanes and stuff....

Tom Perso 12-13-2005 05:23 PM

Yeah, so I had a 63 Bug sitting on a 71 IRS pan. 4 wheel discs, complete rebuild of the suspension, f/r sway bars, etc.

I had a 2270cc T4 with a DTM kit and lots of goodies in it.

Trans was a Rancho T1 with 3.88R/P and a Bus .82 4th gear. Car purred on the highway. Holy crap. At 80, I'd downshift into 3rd and it'd PIN you back into the seat.

And yes, that is my UGLY mug... :)

Here are some movies...

Makin Noise...
I had an exhaust leak still at this time...

Launch...

4th gear at 5000rpm

Startup with a Flowmaster 40 series

Yeah, so I MISS that car. It was loads of fun. I bought a 914, sold the Bug, kept the motor and stuck that in the 914. Then, I decided to run Megasquirt, so out came the peaky 2270 and I'm now building a stock motor...

That's another story though. :)

Tom

Joe Bob 12-13-2005 05:58 PM

How much did the trans set you back?

Tom Perso 12-14-2005 02:25 AM

I bought the trans used from Shad Laws, of LN Engineering. It was in his Fastback with the 2.7L mill of his.

I think he paid nearly 1K for the trans. It had every goodie that Rancho could put in a stock cased T1 trans.

It was nice...

Hey Tom. I thought you were gonna put a Carrera motor in the 914??

I'm doing a 1911 Turbo for my 72 914...

Later,

Eddie.

Tom Perso 12-22-2005 01:43 PM

Well, I was... But the $$$$

I think I may build a 1911 now that I think about it. Just gotta get the heads opened up.

You know... MegaSquirt handles boost pretty well...

Maybe I could follow your footsteps and turbo it :D

Tom
