I am going to be buying my first welder and would like to see what everyone is using or recomends.
I plan on using the welder for auto body work only. Thanks |

A MIG with gas and the capibilities to weld
thin materials is what you want. You need to look at the spec sheets to ensure that the welder will be adjustable enough to use on the thin sheetmetal Try http://www.salesco.com/migs/ That is where I bought mine, I think I have the Century 155G model. So far I've used it to weld on a new qtr panel on my car plus a bunch of other projects. If I was to buy another one, I'd get a 220v instead of the 110v for the times that I want to weld thicker material more easily. Get an electic auto-darkening helmet as well, it'll save you a lot of grief. [This message has been edited by mike mueller (edited 03-26-2001).] |

Century 125GL Gasless MIG (~$250)
It works great for welding on my 914. I got it specifically for repairing the rust ( http://www.coolfuelcells.com/914/rust.htm ). I never welded before buying and using this welder, so I was happy to find it was very easy to learn with; and of course it welded everything I needed just fine. I thought for sure I would buy an auto-darkening helmet, but once I started actually welding I found it wasn't necessary. I'm sure it would be nice to have though. Tim '73 914 2.0L |

Millermatic 130XP for me. Works great. I have used this and a couple of Licoln Electrics. Seems like the Miller has a much larger sweet spot. Makes really nice welds, even for beginers.

I definately agree with the MIG set for gas and 220V. I have a 110V Century Mig that is great up to 3/16 (and you will want to weld thicker stuff, trust me) then you don't get the penetration you need. I bought the 110v because I rent and don't have a 220 outlet. My neighbor showed me an adapter he made to use his 220 dryer outlet duh!!! wish I had thought of that...
