MSD coil with a Permatune?
 

Hi guys,

I have a 912E (type IV motor) and last year I installed a Permatune with good results. I have a standard Bosch blue coil on it now, but I have a new in box MSD coil that I might install if it were worth it. Any suggestions. The permatune directions say to stay away from hi-performance coils, but isn't "blue" a high performance coil?

Nope, the Blue coil is the stock replacement. Touted as higher-performance than the stock one, but just try to find a new stock coil anywhere....

I think they specifically mean coils like the MSD one when they say to stay away from high performance coils. You might, however, consider replacing the Permatune with the MSD system, including their coil. That will let you run the "hot" coil if that is your goal.

The MSD is essentially a CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition), like the Permatune, with a few more bits of circuitry on it. Those bits will fire off several sparks in a row at lower RPMs, which can help burn overly-rich mixtures better and may give you a little bit of low-end torque. (A very very little, in general.)
