No electrical, nothing, nada

I start this thread a few days ago on the notaclub and continue to have the problem. The electrical dies, nothing, no lights, radio, flasher, courtesy light, nothing. Happened again after returning from a suspension test run and died in the garage, conveniently and has not returned.

I checked the battery, it's a new optima, thought it might be defective, 12.66 volts by the meter. Slid under the car and attached a test light to the transmission and big hot lead on the starter, got a solid light.

I'm ready to get an ignition switch, although it seems some things would still work. Anyway, is the OEM worth the extra bucks over the aftermarket? I don't mind the money if it's for a better product, don't want this happening again anytime soon.

thanks
Les

Follow the electrons!

I don't think it's your ignition switch.

Check battery voltage: OK

Check voltage on fuses in fuse panel. You should have the same voltage.

There is a lug behind the fuse panel and above the speaker in the driver footwell. The lug is the main wire from the battery. Mine was not tight. You may want to check yours. Again, check the voltage to ground.

WARNING: disconnect the ground terminal from the battery before moving any wires behind the fuse panel. These cars do not have fusable links and several wires to the fuse panel come directly from the battery. If you short something while moving wires, it could get ugly. Take your time.

Spoke

I had a similar experience with a different make/model car. It drove me nuts and did not make sense.

In my case, I chanced battery cables (both positive and negative) as it would loose all electrical momentarily and then come back. The alternator was new (remanufactured) and the battery was new.

I ended up personally rebuilding the alternator and replacing the new battery. When I returned the battery, I got a new one and a refund as the battery was supposedly defective and had been recalled by the manufacturer. Apparently the battery was known to have internal shorts/defective cells.

My advice would be to check the battery and try a different known good battery before too long...

just my $0.02

I know you checked the + power cable at the starter but did you

check to see if the cable retainer nut was tight. Its open to the road

and if its a little loose it can arch and build up carbon. Being right after

the battery theirs alot of amps running thru there.

Good call.
I put the old battery back in and everything is back to normal. I've only had this battery a month, now have to see about returning this $130 paper weight.

Thought these Optima batteries were the stuff??

Thanks for everyones help.

Get the battery check out before you return it. You may have just moved something when you switched batteries. Your problem could still be there.

I'm glad that you found your problem and that it was an easy fix.

They should give you either a replacement or a full refund on your new battery.
