Replacing 2nd gear synchros is it a big deal

I am looking at a car that needs the synchros on 2nd replaced.I understand that I wont have to pull the box and the job can be done in situ. Can anyone advise and are the synchros expensive?

Oh man, there is a guide right here on pp I think, although I havent done it -yet. I really need to as well, but keep finding that I can fine-tune the shift linkage or at least tighten the clutch cable a little more and the shifting becomes easier.
But actually, although there are a buncha parts and a few pretty delicate steps, I think most of us yahoos could do it.
If not, ship it to RedBeard (PP screen-name). He is apparently the man with the golden touch.

Yes it is BIG deal.

The gear stack can be removed without removing the entire transmission, but the the gear stack has to be completely disassembled.

With patience, a manual, and advice from someone who has done it, you can do it yourself.

Geoff: Yes it is a big deal. Syncros are about 70 but you need other patrs that are related to them. Dogteeth and Sliders are needed on some of the gears. second and third. First gear always needs all of them, about 600 bucks worth just for first. The slider for first gear has a gear cut in it and it cost around 400.

just pulled my first gear this weekend, and it needs a slider, syncro, teeth. all the usual suspects. it makes absolutely no sense to me why the slider costs $400+, but it does.
oh well........
BTW, we also pulled the gear stack on another tranny, and second gear does not look too tough to change, but it is labor intensive, and takes some precision.
