Front Shock Test

I have a 75 2.0 that has been in storage for 18 years. Just removed the shocks from the strut housings. How can I visually and mechanically test the shocks to determine if they are still in usable condition. They were relatively new when the car went into storage. They probably have less than 15k miles of use.

On a stock car I would just do the "push on the bumper test".

Did it bounce up and down or just once?

When you pull up on the rod that travels in and out of the shock you

should have resistance. you can hear the oil being forced thru the valve

in the piston. Pull it in and out with as much force as you can, it should

fight you all the way, you know you are doing it right if it wants a

smoke afterwards. If it moves in and out easly, R&R..

Yup sorta like a spouse. fight you all he way. but you know you are doing it right if it makes a slight squishy noise and gets hotter as you go faster.
Seriously if you make the piston go in very short strokes and and can get no resistance then the shock is going out. Most of your suspension travels only an inch as you run down the road. Faster you go the harder it is to push.

Of course leaking any oil is terminal. What shock is it? Koni Bilstien KYB or Boge. (thats the order I rate them at)
