control units- universal or not??

I think I need a new control unit for my 72 914. there are no numbers on it. Is there a way to identify its part number and do I have to get another unit off a 72 or will any other year work??

You can get rebuilt ones from Pelican:

If you're looking for used ones, I think any of the 1.7 ones will work, but the "right" one is from mid-71 through the end of 72. Any 72, or any 71 that has the idle mixture control knob on the ECU should be the correct part.

Why do you think you need a new ECU? Does yours have a large hole in it? Are the injectors turning on and not turning off? If the symptoms aren't one of those two, then it is very likely that your ECU is fine. Check Kjell Nelin's D-jet Guide http://www.914fan.net/djet.html for lots and lots and lots of info on your FI system.

the car has sat for 9 years. it ran when it was parked, but now it won't start. I replaced the rotor, plugs, wires, etc. the fuel pump won't run unless its run straight from the battery. I had a guy over and he said it was probably the ecu, we took it off the firewall and a small, brass piece fell out of it. I talked with another guy that has a volkswagon shop, he said it is probably the fuel pump relay. I'm really don't know what wrong with it. I was given the car because my dad was tired of storing it.

To see why the fuel pump won't run, check the following tech article: http://www.914fan.net/fuelpump.html
