question abt gluing sail panel vinyl to painted metal
HI All
Have decided that this weekend I will finally install the new sail panel vinyl I got from Pelican. Of course, I forgot to order the Wurth adhesive, so I will get some 3M spray adhesive from the local NAPA. But, heres the question(s). The car is newly painted, including the panels that the new vinyl will be attatched to. Do I prepare the newly painted metal in any way in prep for installing the vinyl? Do I apply the spray adhesive to both the back of the the vinyl and the body or just one or the other? And, is it a good idea to use the old vinyl as a pattern for cutting the new vinyl? I cant see why not, but who knows? Thanks everyone, and have a great Memorial Day weekend. Curt

I'd wait at least a week or so after painting so the adhesive doesn't lift the paint. No prep needed except make sure all surfaces are clean. Spray the adhesive on both surfaces and mask off sufficiently so you don't get overspray on the car. You can use the old vinyl as a pattern but allow another 1/4" or so extra material because the old vinyl has usually shrunk.

I can't stress this enough, make sure you mask the car off really good so you keep glue off areas you don't want it. It will lift your paint!
