still won't run
OK, here's my problem. I have a 72 that sat for 9 years. it ran when it was parked. I got my hands on it over the winter. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, rotor, cap, fuel filter, and drained 6 gallons of bad gas out of it. I put injector cleaner in new gas. It wouldn't fire. I replaced the fuel pump relay and got a used ecu that looked ok. After all this, it still won't start. It cranks over good. We also hooked the fuel pump directly up to the battery and it still won't fire. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm definitely NOT an expert on these!

Well there is alot to check...
FI system or carbs? IF its FI...see Kjell Nelins FI article, this site, Got spark? Does the starter crank over? We need more info an all its doing/not doing... |
You didn't mention the oil
I hope that you changed that. I have heard of these motors sitting for extended periods of time and the engine components rusting and binding. You may have to crank the motor by hand to get it "unstuck" from sitting. Then I would try to start it again. ******************************************** After reading your post I noticed that the motor was turning over. maybe check for spark and gas Good luck. Well,
it is fuel injected, when we wired the fuel pump to the battery it pumped fuel. Its got a new battery and power wire going to the starter and it turns over good. It doesn't even try to fire it just turns over. We didn't put new points in the distributor, I heard these rarely do bad?? I did change the oil and filter and I also put a few drops of oil into each cylinder before I put the new plugs in. scott Quote:

Remove a spark plug wire. Then, take an old spark plug and connect it to the wire. Try to start it. You should see a spark.
If you have spark and no start, Then you can hot wire the cold start valve to see if it will start. |
The injectors could be plugged/stuck? Try pulling one and see if they spray. At the same time there may be no compression due to stuck rings and hoses that are leaking so bad there is no chance of making vacuun? If the injectors fire some fuel and you get a spark as mentioned earlier then give it a good shot of instant start/either to help it along which will make an engine with almost no compression start. Good luck.

You are thinking of the injector points that rarely go bad. The ignition points last 10,000 miles if you're lucky. I've have points fail after my car sat for a month during huricane season, so I would start with new points and condesor. Also look for +12v at the coil, and as was mentioned use a plug grounded to the case to look for spark. I started a 1.7L that sat in Ohio for 7-8 years so it can be done. Also with the key on, push the acc pedal and listen for clicking coming from the injectors.
A cheap test to see if the ignition system is working is to shoot a second or two blast of starting fluid (D-Jet systems only please) into the intake. If it starts for a second or two you have spark. |
I think I may have found the problem. the gas peddle won't move and I can't the throttle body to open up. I think its stuck!
