Post wont start

i just purchased a 76 914( fuel inj.) last weekend. when i got it the D- wire from the relay board to the alternator was fried. i replaced that. the car turns over fine,it sounds like it wants to start.but i dont think the fuel pump is getting any power. how can i test this?the guy i bought it from said something about the heaterfan being burned so he bypassed it and thats why the wire to the alternator fries when the heater is turned on. anyone got any advice?

Cool

Your fuel pump is located in the front trunk.
The Bulkhead in front of the gas tank has a small access door to the fuel pump.

When you turn on the ignition key the pump should click. You can also put a test light
on the red/Black wire to see if you have power to the pump... You an also use a voltmeter on this lead to check for power with the key on. If none exist I believe there is a Fuelpump relay on the circuit board in the engine compartment.

Just for clarification, on my FI ’73 (and I believe the ’76 as well), the pump will only have power:

1. For about one second after turning the key to the run position (with the engine not running)
2. While cranking the engine
3. With the engine running

Just don’t be confused if you turn the key on, go check for power at the pump with your meter, and it shows zero. Wire the meter, or the test lamp, so you can see it from the drivers seat. Or get a helper.

You can search the past posts on the issue as some report slightly different behavior, but this seems to be the general consensus.

My 76 had the same problem when I got it. The heater booster fan had deadshorted burning the relay board. Try troubleshooting the fuel pump as described above to see if you have power to the pump. There is also a way to jumper the pump by pulling out the relay. Then jumper the contacts to get power to the pump. I think there is a tech article on this site. If you don't get power at the pump, pull the relay board so you can inspect it. (look at the bottom of it for damage)
Also, switch out the heater fan with one from a junkyard so it works right...and doesn't short out the electrical system.

That's what it's supposed to do. It runs for 1.5 seconds after you turn the key to "on" to pressurize the system. It also runs while you are cranking. If the engine starts, and the revs are greater than 90 RPM, the fuel pump will stay running. All of this behavior is controlled by the ECU.
