It seems like the 914 would be a great car in the Islands. Anyone own one over there?

Hmmm, it rains all the time over there. Rain = rust. Roads are slow, windy and crowded in many places. I think Calif. is a far better place to keep all the 914s.

A few years ago when I went to Kauaii, I kept my eyes open the whole time thinking, hey wouldn't it be neat if someone had one over here. Well I found one, probably the only one on the entire island, probably what any 914 that ever comes to the island will eventually look like! Here it is!

My 73 is just finishing the conversion stage to 3.2l. I live on the North Shore and hope
ruby won't look like that in a few years. Mark |

I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii between 1995-99. I think I came across the holy grail of 914s in January of 99, my senor year of high school. While browsing through the classifieds, I came across a red 74 914 1.8 with the weber carb conversion. Slightly oxidized (but fairly presentable) exterior, with a little rust on the rockers. Nice black interior, no dash cracks and clean, carpeted trunks. Steel VW wheels spray painted black. Ran good, but the clutch slipped. Everything else worked. The owner didn't let me drive it but he took me on a ride to prove it was a solid car. I can still remember the sound of that engine like it was yesterday. It was garage kept, the only reason it was being sold was because of the owner's recent 914/6 purchase. Asking price-$1000!!! I should've bought it the day I saw it, but being a kid making $700 a month as a part-time Valet, I wanted a night to think about it. This was to be a second "fun" car to complement my daily driven 944. How cool would that be to own 2 Porsches before graduating from high school? The next day I went to the bank and prepared $1000 cash and called the owner. I wanted this car! Unfortunatly, someone called right after I checked it out on the previous day and bought it on the spot. My Mom and I still talk about what a great car that would've been. I'll never forget that Hawaiian 914. Oh well, I'll find myself a 914 someday, but I doubt I'll ever find a car like that one for only $1000.

Shipping stuff to Hawaii is not that expensive by boat... at least is wasn't when I did it in 1991 when I was on the Big Island for awhile.
They shipped by volume, not by weight, as I recall. I crated up a motorcycle as well as lots of personal things, delivered them to Long Beach, CA and picked them up in Hilo, HI. Shoot.. the 914 is so small, you could probably crate it up as well... they also have specific car transport services too as I recall. Get a rust free car in the LA area and put it on the boat. - Dave |

The reason I truely love 914's was the fact that my Dad drove a 914-6 that he bought from the original owner in 1977. We lived in so-cal at the time (Villa Park and Newport Beach) and he commuted to L.A. everyday in that bright orange machine. The original owner was a nieghbor who was the typical 70's surfer guy who shaped boards on the big island during the winter. He bought the car in Hawaii and shipped it back and forth 3 times in the years he owned it! Sure wish Dad had held on to that car, but "it wasn't practical in Colorado"...

Tom Whitaker, he would be in his late 40's early 50's now. He did shaping for himself under "Tom Whitaker Designs" (I think I may have one of his boars at my folks) and did stuff for other companies as well. I think he has a constuction business now out of San Bernadino. He was the cool surfer, motocross, car guy in the neighborhood. We were all pups at the time (born in the late 60's) and looked at him as some sort of god!
Great guy. -S |

One less than before...I bought my first 914 on Oahu a few years back. Looked pretty good but had a carb conversion which ran "ok". But a big rust problem under the battery. I paid way too much. Got transfered to CA and sold the car there for 1/4 of my original investment.

Red...yes. 1974...no. I think it was a 1970. It was a tail shifter. I was just glad to be rid of the rust monster.
