painting the top

What is the best way to paint the top.

It's fiberglass with gelcoat on it. Most automotive paints will work fine--just sand, fill, prime, and paint.

If you're looking to replicate the factory "pebbled" finish, then you want to purposely set up your spray gun incorrectly to give you pretty heavy "orange peel". You'll have to do some experimentation to find out what gives you the results you're looking for, though.
