What should be next?
I have a 71 914 with the 19mm brake master cylinder, ss lines and good pads. it has a 1.8l in it with all the origional but in not the greatest shape parts. I just put a weiltmeister short shifter in it with new bushings, and can't shift the damn thing. So asides from figuring out how to adjust the tranny, what is the next best upgrade?

Hmm.
Good question. We need more details. Autocross, Drivers ed, track or just an occassional driver? Personally, I like the 5 lug stuff. |
Track w/ an occasional street drive. Obviously a motor upgrade will come, but thats a cubic money issue. I am not too concerned with staying stock or stock type in any department. If I go to a five lug, can I use a modern 911 so I can get the really huge brakes or do I have to stay in the late 70's?

SC brakes are more than plenty for virtually any 914. Actually, stock 914 brakes are fine for virtually any 914/4, until you are essentially building a track car with 200+ hp.
As to next upgrades, sounds like your car has stock springs and no swaybars. A nice street/autox setup is 19mm front swaybar, 140lb rear springs, and get the car lowered, aligned and corner balanced by someone who knows about Porsche suspensions. You will be shocked by the improvement. Chris C. |
I'd put in a side-shift transmission.

How much can I expect to pay for one of the side shifter trannies?
