There is a used Chalon body kit for sale on E Bay. It started at $50 but is now over $800. I was initially interested when I saw it at $250 (way cheaper than a Rayco kit). But all of the bidders are new or have the "shades" symbols becasuse they changed their identities. So I am a bit hesitant to bid. Can you even but a new Chalon kit anymore.
Comments or thoughts please. Thanks |

Oh I hate to say this, but I think Automobile Atlanta still sells the kit and maybe someone else does too, though I'm not sure.
Update: just went through about 200 pages in AA's online catalog (man that rots) and found this. Too expensive for my blood. http://www.automobileatlanta.net/action.lasso?-database=Items%20database&-layout=web%20layout&-response=record_detail.lasso&-recordID=12600476&-search ------------------ Dave 1970 914/6 1995 Golf GTI-VR6 1996 Passat TDI [This message has been edited by David McLaughlin (edited 06-23-2001).] [This message has been edited by David McLaughlin (edited 06-23-2001).] |

Other folks still sell it. But, and I've owned a Chalon myself, don't do the conversion. Yes, it's your car, but my advice (and yes, you may take it with a grain of salt) is to accept the 914 for what it is. They just never seem to be as awesome as you think they're going to be once they're on the car. And then it's a little late for putting those fenders back on. I thought about the Rayco too, way way back in the middle eighties. They look even worse than the Chalon. Again, your car, but IMHO don't do it.

Yea, I saw the Chalon kit in the AA catalog too, but my catalog is a few years old. If they and others are still selling it, I bet it's NOS. I'm pretty sure the company that made the kit is no longer around.
Anyway, my car has a couple of dents in the fenders and needs painting. If I coulda got that used kit for a couple hundred or so, It would be about the same cost as fixing my dents. |

I know that there will be lots of slack after posting this. I have a full Rayco kit on my 73' and I will have to say that I'm very happy with all the work and results. There will be purists that will scoff at this idea, but to each his own. The car is a far cry from a ghettomobile. No clear lenses in the back or 12" wheels sticking out the side. This kit was put on with many many hours of painstaking attention to detail. It shows nicely and I have taken many trophies with her. I admit that it isn't for every one and some like the teener just the way they are. Me...I wanted something different, to each his own.

That's one of the best things about the 914--there is just so much that you can do with it!! Not only can you put one of a dozen or more body kits on the car, but you can do just about anything as far as the power train goes, and adding all kinds of "accessories" isn't actually that difficult, and on and on... You can pretty much use the basic 914 chassis to build whatever kind of car you like. And it will still out-handle 90% of the cars on the road today.
I haven't really seen a body kit that I like. But that's my own personal taste. It just means that I won't be putting a kit on my car any time soon. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |
