1972 shifter adjustment
I'm a VW tech in Windsor Ontario whose been charged with doing work on a customers 72 914 1.7l. the car came in with a sloppy shifter, that had worn out busings as well as missing parts. After rebuilding the whole assembly(in car and underneath) and locating neutral on the transmission, I've got some of the gears, but not all. With time costing money and me trying to keep his costs reasonable, what is the correct procedure to adjust the linkage. A Porsche Tech at Pfaff Porsche got me in the ball park, but I want it closer. Reverse is a definite as well as 2nd and 4th. She grinds going into 1st and 5th gear feels almost nonexistent. Any help would be appreciated

We have the following Tech Article, but that does not describe the adjustment process.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_shift_improve/914_tail_shift_improve.htm The adjustment procedure is covered in Haynes, as much as anything is. The general idea is to get the bottom part of the shift lever vertical, and just touching the 1st/Rev detent, when the transmission is in neutral. Tighten the adjustment up and try to find the gears, then finagle as necessary. There isn't a whole lot of feel, unfortunately, due to the number of components and possible wear points. When everything is new, the TS can shift reasonably well, but never anywhere near as good as a modern car. --DD
