Which ring compressor to use???
 

I got my new piston/cylinder set yesterday and picked up the heads from the machine shop. So after checking the ring end gap I was ready to install the cylinders. One little problem....The ring compressor that I have wont work. It's a standard band type thats 3.5 inches long. The problem is that once I have it on the piston there is no room to slide it off when I insert it into the cylinder. It's hard to visualize from explaining it, if you've ever done one then you'll know what I'm talking about. So whats the trick?? I've checked the local parts stores and they all carry the same type ring compressor. So I'm stuck with all these new parts and I cant put it together

You need the flat strap style any VW parts place carries them they are about $5. Steve

You CAN use that "standard" style of tool. Just put the sleeve on the piston, then the piston on the rod. I did this a few times when working on my T1 engines, I don't see why the T4 should be any different.

If you're talking about the ring compressor where you cinch it tight with a socket wrench or screw driver, I have used these with no problem. I assemble the piston and sleeve on the bench using the compressor, then push the piston down through the sleeve so that the pin bore is fully exposed. I put one pin circlip in, and then I place the whole assembly in position on the engine, push the pin through the rod end, insert the other circlip and press the sleeve into position.

I've never tried the method where the piston is installed on the rod first and then the sleeve is installed, though I suppose it works just as well.

I never thought of putting the piston in the jug first duh, I bought a ring compressor from a VW shop for $4 and installed it last night. Thanks for the suggestions!
