Fuel lines

What is the sugested replacement parts for the fuel lines that go through the car to the front gas tank? Can I use metal fuel line or will this cause over heating? What is used to keep it from rattleing around? I see the two hoses are not the same size so what is used for the smaller hose?

Tangerine

Heat is not a problem with the stainless lines.

Personally, I believe the biggest problems are with the rubber lines in the engine compartment, and the plastic lines in the tunnel are fine.

But if you want to replace the tunnel lines, the Tangerine product is as good as it gets.

What is the tangerine product.I don't come to this board very often but I've been on Pelican for some time now. I'm heavy into porsches. This is the first 914-4 for me. The 911's and 944's have steel lines. Wonder why they used plastic.

Pre bent lines that fit pretty much perfect, get the lines for the engine compartment while you are at it. When installing, it is easier to do passenger side line through tunnel first, use silicone spray on grommets.

This will require removing fuel tank, will be easier if you remove floor board under pedals(trick to that one, have to twist board the right way) You will also be replacing the fuel hose under the tank at the same time, use new, nice hose clamps, busdepot.com has them for pretty reasonable.

How hard is this to do with the engine in? Are you better off taking it out, assuming you weren't planning to do anything else while you were in there?

Not that tough, have to get the car up in the air pretty good, but eminently doable with engine in car. Sort of a two guy thing though, one at back , one to feed line through front grommet.

Can VW cloth fuel hose be used on a Fuel injected 914. The short hoses that are connected to the fuel pump and on top of the engine or is ther a different hose made for fuel injection The VW repair shop here said it can be used but I don't want a fire down the road.

I would use hose that's rated for fuel injection. It's designed to withstand a lot more psi. Our host has a good article regarding replacing the fuel lines in the center tunnel. There's also one for removing the gas tank if you haven't done that and even relocating the fuel pump. I followed the article and used brake lines. My engine it out though, and am not sure how difficult it would be with the engine in the car.

come on don't you see all the VW stamps all over the car?
that is what they came with....they are cloth covered rubber hoses.

my PO redid the lines with the same cloth covered flexible sections and plastic lines in the straight sections again...

the cloth wrapped stuff came on it and all the other VW FI cars. I would get the 7mm ID, 13mmOD stuff they sell here. No cloth, think there was a recall on the cloth covered stuff in the engine compartment

RECALL, They still sell the stuff here. What did others use. I will have the engine out. I don't want a FIRE. The fuel pump has a return so how much pressure could there be. I ordered the Tangerine lines. I just want to re place the short lines.

6B....use the newer FI hose...has a smooth covering....this is what the recall was all about...the braided hose is great stuff for 3 to 5 psi carbs but as it ages the 30psi fuel pressure will seep through it and finally start spraying fuel everywhere....nothing like those short hose lines around the injectors leaking....just below them are the heat exchangers....either way make sure you get fuel rated hose and not vacuum hose...there is a difference.....
Good luck with your 914....John
