Master cylinder replacement
My 75 has very soft feeling brakes. It stops but it doesn't feel right. I tried to bleed the lines but got no air. I'm thinking that I may need to replace the master cylinder and rubber flex hoses as my car just came out of a 20 year storage. I looked on this site but the rebuild parts are no longer available. Someone told me that a VW master cylinder will work fine. They look different to me. I'm not sure that a VW master cylinder would develop enough pressure to work correctly on a 914.
Also, when I let off the brake pedal it comes up farther than it should. Shouldn't there be some sort of stop to keep it where it belongs. If so, mine is missing. Do I have to rebuild the whole pedal cluster or is this part available seperately? |

Do the rubber flex hoses first, they stretch when they get old and give a soft pedal. Use either the 17mm stock, or 19mm out of a 911. I think the VW one is a 21 mm, if I recall correctly, but that may be the one out of a bus. VW on will not have correct attachments for the warning light

Don't forget to also bleed the proportioning valve in the engine compartment. Use a rag as you tend to spill brake fluid (at least I do) and it can eat the paint. The prop valve can be a pain to bleed but it's necessarry if you're going to get all the air out of the system.
