Exclamation Help w/upper steering shaft bearing

I have the Haynes manual for my '75 914-4. Have removed the horn ring and steering wheel. Loosened the upper intermediate universal joint and tried to pull the shaft out. It sis not want to come out and I did not want to force it without asking if I am doing it correctly or if there was another way to replace the bearing. Is there a good way to remove the shaft or an easier way to replace the bearing?

is your bearing bad or do you have excessive up and down play at steering wheel?to replace bearing the ignition and steering lock must be removed..big job..to fix up and down play an external sleeve is pushed in from the top.it is a 928 part #the host sells them

It's got play all the way around. I can not seem to get the switches out to inspect the bearing. The Haynes manual says to pull the whole shaft out (with the switches). As per above, I could not get the shaft out. When I tried to take out the switches (with the shaft in place) after removing the four screws, I could not pull them out. Is something else holding them in place?

I had the "up, down and all around" problem in my steering wheel too.
I installed the steering column bushing (p/n 928.347.739.02.M100 from Pelican) and problem solved. I used the Haynes manual for basic disassembly, but didn't attempt to remove the steering shaft. After removing the steering wheel, everything else came out pretty easily. Mine's a '75 also btw.
Did you disconnect the two plastic connectors at the base of the steering stalk? How about the washer hoses? Those are the only things I can think of, that could be slowing you down. Mike

Thanks Kirmizi!
It was the washer hoses that were giving me the resistance. I have the bushing and the bearing. Thought that if I could get the bearing out fairly easily I would replace back to stock. Replaced the bearing and it's all back together.

Good Deal! I repaired mine this past summer, in addition to adding an electric washer pump. Gave me an opportunity to clean out everything and discard the washer lines from the steering column. Glad I could help. Mike

Kirmizi,
What kind of washer pump did you install?
I think the concept of using the spare tire is a rather cool idea, but electricity is good.
Thanks,
Rick

Early 911, p/n 928.628.074.01.M82 I believe. Got mine from Pelican last year, bout $40. Easy install in later model teeners. Excellent installation instructions with pics on the 914World BBS. Mike
