In "Hot rodding your VW Engine" the author mentions machining grooves .090" wide around the circumference of the T1 cam gear (in effect segmenting the teeth)to add hp by aiding in the displacement of oil as the teeth mesh and to reduce the amount of oil misted and slung around by the gear. I notice the FAT offers this as a swervice in their price book for T4 engines as well.
Has anyone tried or dyno'ed this, and is it a worthwhile mod? Up late with nurbling 8-week old twin boys... ------------------ -- Dave Pics of my '73 project here: http://members.tripod.com/mike4g/dds73_b4pics.htm |

Hi Dave,
The mod on the gear is popular, mainly, again if you are to see a lot of high RPMs. If the car is to be mainly driven on the street, It really isn't necessary. However, It couldn't hurt either. If you've got the extra bucks, go for it. I mainly just deburr the new gear and the crank gear (if it too is new) just so they'll mesh easier and there will be less shavings in your first break in period. The theory behind machining the cam gear is to provide an area on the gear profile for the oil to disperse more efficiently. I hope this helps, ------------------ 72'914 John@pelicanparts.com |

I've done that a few times. No back to back testing, but no problems either.
