Question 914 Grill letter removal

Is there a secret to removing the speed-nuts from the grill P O R S C H E lettering? I did not have trouble with the grill because the posts are metal, but the letters seem to be fragile.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

I have been having the same issue! I've had the donor grill in the rear trunk of my car since I got it, trying to figure out how to get those dang things off so I can put them on my car.

The rubber push "retainer" that hold the grill down has a steel "one-way" ring embedded in it. You need to pinch the retainer at its base closest to the grill to break the steel ring - I use needlenose pliers. If you pinch it right, you can feel the steel ring break. Once it breaks, the retainer should come off fairly easily. In some cases, the steel is badly rusted and the rubber around it will break away. If this occurs, you'll be able see the steel ring that needs to be broken to remove the retainer.

PM me if you need further explanation.

Hi Guys,

Been there, done that last week. 'Speed Nut' is an oxymoron. They don't go on fast and they certainly don't come off fast. The last 14 I ordered took about 3 weeks to come in from PParts, no fault of theirs ... and they don't take on the conical shape of the existing ones until you PRESS them on ,,, they are actually a flat disc when new, but the pressure exerted to install them creates the conical shape.

The whole ordeal is measured destruction of the existing nut and a measured force to install the new speed nut. (don't even think of using an old speed nut again ... they're a 'one hit wonder'. Throw them right in the trash ... done. )

Be sure to make a diagram of the number of lozenges (diamonds); including halves, between the top or bottom and in between the letter's STUDS.

And ... as if you didn't know ... put some special thought into how you'll clean and preserve the letters that you have removed. (Put them on a special background and take a good picture. Or use them to do a block print on a T Shirt or a piece of paper. Seriously, you don't want to ever take them off the grill again. Polish them and refer to some other article/resource as to how best protect the finish)

The final result is an awesome touch. Remember all the effort while you're doing the prep work for painting the grill. You definitely won't want to do this as regular maintanence ... But the result of refreshing everything on the deck is VERY rewarding!

Nice touch to my 914 And it will be to your little car, too.

Rick

It's the details ...
