944 Trailing arms w/ 914 tranny ?
 

I'm putting a 914 tranny in my bug ( I know, gasp!...) I was wondering if the 944 trailing/diagonal arms will mate up to the 914 tranny?

Wouldn't it be easier to put a Bus tranny in, or at least a 901 from a 911 or 912. That way the ring and pinion would be pointing the right way. Not sure how you can flip the ring and pinion on a 914/901 box, the side cover only comes off on on side.

thats not cool! I didnt know the side plate only comes off one side!! I guess I'll just look at it when I get it, I'm only paying $75 for it anyway. If i cant use it I'll have to get a 911/01 tranny, which is what I really wanted anyway.

Use 944 arms if you want to.

Use a 901 from a 911 or 912.

I read your article before I even considered doing the conversion. It was very helpful. If I used the 914 tranny and the 911/01 nosecone, wouldn't that work too? The reason I ask is because I found a 914 trannyfor $75 and the guy has already shipped it. It should get here tomorrow! I've heard of some people using this tranny before with the 911 nosecone, but maybe that was just talk...

1.) Fliping R&P isn´t a matter from witch side the trany can be opend it is a matter if you have enough place in the housing to turn the Ringear to the other side and it does it at Porsche.
2.) If you have nor IRS axle you better shop for a other IRS platform
3.) This conversion has done very often and the 914 trany is designed to be used with the 1302 plattform ( Porsche Salzburg built Rallyecars ) Just have a look into:

Using a 914 tranny is a really good way to get one VERY LOW forward gear and five speeds in reverse. If you actually wanted five forward speeds, you'll have to try flipping the ring and pinion of the tranny. Which is evidently non-trivial.

Chances are that it will be more cost-effective to locate a 901 tranny from a 911 or 912 (all pre-72).

Dave, I don't think it will be all that much trouble to flip the ring and pinion. I know lots of people do it in the corvairs and such to use other engines. I'll look at the tranny tomorrow when it gets here and see whats going on. I'll get back to yall then. I think I'll go ahead and get the trailing arms and brake assemblies and see for myself what I can do.

Fisher Engineering in Phoenix did a 914 trans in a Ghia a few months ago in Hot VWs magazine. I presume that they used 901 nose cone parts and flipped the dif. Or, it could have been a typo and they meant to type 912 http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif One never knows.

Either way, you'll probably need to buy a complete 901 to get the nose cone parts you need. Either way http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

Oh yeah, make sure to get all the Porsche shifting parts including the bushing support, shift rod, the shifter, and the panel from the floor where the shifter bolts down. Less to fabricate from scratch that way.

I will NEVER do this conversion again. A $3,500 Berg Box would be smarter if I worked for 5 cents an hour!
