1974 914/1.8, original FI. Just below the lower alternator bolt, there appears to be a deadleg to the blower housing (the aluminum part, not tinwork) that has a rectangular rubber plug glued into it with blue RTV. The plugged opening points towards the alternator. What is it? Also, I am installing an alternator and belt. Alternator and little rubber air duct fit in just fine, but I see no way that the 10x965 belt I got from PP is going to fit. Threw old belt away already (stupid). Were there two belt sizes or are they a REALLY (read 'crowbar') tight fit at first.

Will98D,
The opening your talking about on the blower housing is supposed to connect up to the heat exchangers via a metal duct (rectangular cross-section). This duct allows forced air fromthe cooling fan to blow over the heat exchangers and into the cockpit - assuming you have the heater boxes that control this, installed. There is a similar opening on the opposite side of the fan housing for the other heat exchanger. In either case its not crital that these be hooked up immediately. Once it gets cold where you're at though, you'll want them. Not sure if the belts are different sizes as mine is a 2.0 liter, and new belt fit great. It may be possible that they sent you the wrong belt, though not often - it does happen. Check your 914 manual for the proper belt size and measure what you received. Hope that helps, ------------------ Gerard 74-914 2.0L 3D914 rodrigos6@juno.com |

Roland saya that by blocking off the hole you will increase the cooling air flow about 20o/o as the air flowing thur the HE just blows out when the heater is off.Steve
