turbo 914 ?

has anyone ever turbo'd a 914-4? I'm thinking of it as a project. I have a 911 right now, but I used to have a 914 and loved it.

Do a search here and on the 914club site and you'll find many turbo projects. If I remember correctly even Sammyg who posts here did one years and years ago, but then again my memory is fading due to old age.

Hey, looks like I'll be the first one this thread to say, "Everyone knows you can't turbo a 914!" (Sorry, inside joke from years ago.)

It has been done at least five or six times that I know of. (We're talking a stockish four-banger motor, right?) SammyG used a single side-draft carb as a draw-through setup. Evill Ed and EJM both used different versions of CIS from VWs or Volvos. EJM's setup was more sophisticated, but both worked very well--and are still on the road today! Jeff S mucked around with the D-jet system until it worked reasonably well. He started with a junker motor, with the theory that he could waste that without heartache and build a good motor after he had figured out the D-jet tuning.

Sammy's car is long gone. Evill Ed sold his, but it's still going strong. EJM still has his. Jeff tore his apart and has not, that I've heard, put it back together again.

There were also at least a couple of Crown Engineering kits (and MSDS kits) that were completed; they used a modified D-jetronic setup as well. One sold on e-bay a few years ago, evidently running at that time.

The stock motor can't handle much boost--about 7 PSI or so. Modified motors can handle more; good charge cooling helped EJM's and Evill Ed's cars deal with more. I don't know what the peak numbers were on theirs.

thanks for the info, it will be useful. I haven't been around the type 4 for a long time, and wonder just where its weak points are. any help in that area?

I have a turbo setup for a 914 sitting in a car I just bought for $50.00. The turbo setup is for CIS I think. It's been laying on the ground in a field for several years, it's mostly junk. Sand in the turbo, rusty exhaust, etc.

The biggest weak point: The heads. They don't seal that well to the cylinders, particularly under lots of boost. Cooling them properly can be something of a problem as well.

There are other things that can be problems, but the heads are probably the biggest issue for a forced-induction motor.

I have a Turbo VW Type I in a tubeframed Speedster. Megaqsuirt controlled and a modified CB Performance kit, dual ITB throttle bodies and a Schaffer turbo.

I have to run two oil coolers and an intercooler otherwise it hits 240F REAL quick. Took me three years to get it straight. I still tinker with it.
