what cam to use with turbo?

What cam should be used with a turbo?
I have a 1.8liter engine in my 914 that I am going to turbocharge and I wonder if there is a preferred cam for everyday use and some track use. I am currently running the stock FI cam. Also would 2.0liter heads give me more exhaust flow for the turbo? What are my options of keeping heat down, I was thinking about a front mounted oil cooler.
thanks in advance,
Kelly

Hey, where are you getting turbo from? And how much are you paying for it?

You can't turbo a 914!

Check with CB Performance, they have type 4 turbo kits. They should know about cams.

www.cbperformance.com

I think that's the correct address.

The turbo is a used kit.
He ran it on his 914 for some time.

The stock cam will be fine or use one with a higher lift but no extra duration. Long duration cams and turbos/blowers do not mix very well.

Pick up a turbo book and it'll explain it to you.

Yeah, what Mike said.
Keep the duration below 270 degrees, a little extra lift heps, but don't go crazy.
Turbomania is a good book that explains many things about putting a turbo on an air cooled flat 4 motor. You can get it at www.cbperformance.com

Went to a classic car show down in Dayton Ohio last month and saw a 74 2.0 teener with a turbo out of a Corvair Corsa! I was impressed with the mods to get it to hook up. This car was lighting quick on it's feet. I'd love to find one for mine sniff sniff....

The turbo setup was a Air Research(Garrett)turbo to a side draft weber with custom intake and headers/exhuast.
Unfortunately it wS sold before I could claim it. I guess I will have to make my own.
If by chance the person who got this setup is a Pelican member speakup
here are some pics:

"Gee, that looks awfully familiar!"

The person who put it together has in the past been a visitor to this BBS. Hopefully he will be speaking up... Right, Mohawk Man?? (inside joke)

Yup, that be me.
I sold the car to a friend in Georgia, who sold it to someone else.
The car was very quick, but the bottom end of the engine was tired. i refreshed the top end, and it held up very well, even under an occasional 11 psi boost.
The engine seemed most happy with around 6 or 7 psi, which was still very "noticable".
If anyone wants details of the install, lemme know.
I tried to buy just the turbo system back, but it looks like it is gone. Any idea what it sold for?
BTW, you can't turbo a 914 :-)

I don't think I had ever seen pictures of Sam's turbo installation. Very compact set-up, looks like it could be an out of the box bolt-on. Especially like the intake runners siamesed into one tube. Wonder what the new owners plans are for it?

a turbo 1.8 with CIS?.. do you know Ed Villela (hope that's spelled right).. he's got the same setup (probably not the same physically, but a 1.8L with cis).. how many lbs of boost (or bar, whichever you're measuring in) are you running in the 1.8?..

just checked the website.. i guess Ed V. is running a 1.7..

got pics of your 1.8L turbo?..

Jeff - 2.0L turbo, taken apart right now..

echocanyons 10-09-2001 09:16 PM

He was asking 800.00 for the whole thing including the 2.0l I imagine he got at least that for it.

Sam and Mark are both rolling over in their graves (if they were dead, luckily, they're not).. they've got more than that into the project, that turbo is basically NEW.. i think it has about 300 bucks into the turbo rebuild by itself..

wow.. for that price, i would have picked up the motor just for spare parts!..

Jeff - I've known Ed V. since he was running carbs. We talked then about CIS as THE FI system to use. DD has pictures of my car here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/DaveDarling/ECR_01/Friday_AM.html
My boost regulation is electronic, using a switch circuit in a digital gauge. I usually set it to 7 or 8 lbs but I have run it as high as 14 briefly. The turbo is from the current VW/Audi 1.8t engine. The exhaust travels through SS heater boxes to an extractor, then progressively smaller tubing until the turbos 1.5" inlet, boost comes up real fast. The car seems real quick, lots of fun to drive.

Geez, I would have paid $800 just for the turbo and plumbing.
Maybe it will surface again sometime.

I could duplicate the set up, but the time involved is staggering. One of those, "I wish I never started this" type of projects.
It sure was fun when it ran though.
I never got a chance to get 100% of the bugs out of it, I sold it before I had time.
The jetting needed a little tweaking, and the cold start circuit was not hooked up yet, but other than that it was a nice running motor. (oil leaks don't count:-)

The pictured setup looks like a 1200 degree engine heater...What keeps the fan from sucking hot turbo radiating air to cool the engine?
