Center Console Wiring

Hi, I have a '71 that came from the PO with an unwired center console with a clock, voltmeter and temp gauge (VDO).

I have the wiring harness, but I need to tap into the correct wires for the gauge power and lights.

Obviously the clock needs to be 'always on', and the lights need to be wired into the lighting circuit etc. I get all that but I have no clue where to start.

I've got a Hayes Manual and the wiring diags from this site (thank you!).

I need to know exactly where to tap into the wiring. I'd really appreciate if someone could explain in words of one syllable.

Do I need to unscrew the fusebox, for example to get at the wiring. Also there's a black box with wires that come from the ignition going into it and a bunch that come out the other side for no discernable reason.

So, if I could get a 101, perhaps I could put the old electrical classes from an old engineering degree to good use.

I'm pretty sure I need:

Always on power for the clock
Ignition power for the temp and voltage gauges.
Lighting for all
Grounding/Earth - thats easy.

Wires: I have a few colours of 16 gauge and connectors from autozone - will that do it?

thanks
Claus
